The minimum depth needed depends on your boat's draft (the depth from waterline to the lowest point of the hull). Deep-water canals with 4-6 feet or more at low tide accommodate most sport fishing yachts, while shallower canals may limit vessel size.

It depends on your vessel. A flats boat needs 18 inches. A center console with twin outboards needs 4 feet. If you are planning to dock a larger sportfish or cruising boat, you want at least 6 feet at mean low water. I match every buyer to a canal that fits their boat, not the other way around.
